How to Shop at H&M

The first time you shop at H&M can be overwhelming. The Sweden-based retail chain offers affordable yet fashion-forward clothing and accessories for men and women. If you are lucky enough to live in a larger city where an H&M store is located or encounter one on vacation, follow these easy steps below to get the most out of your shopping experience. You can also shop H&M online.

Plan ahead to shop at the best time. Not surprisingly, H&M stores are crowded. If possible, try to shop at an off time, such as the morning or mid-afternoon. This way you avoid waiting on line for extended periods for the dressing room and check-out.

Know which sections suit your style. H&M is divided into several sections, from more conservative, every day wear (work clothes, casual dress); trendy clothes (you’ll get a season or two wear out of them and then they look dated); and teen (not that these clothes can’t work for any age, but they are decidedly more bright and ‘young’ looking). Depending on what you’re looking for, you can quickly zero in on the appropriate section, saving you a lot of time.

Keep sizing in mind. Once you’ve found a piece of clothing that catches your eye, remember that H&M’s sizing is European and not necessarily what you’re accustomed to. For example, if you typically wear a size 6, you may find that an 8 fits more comfortably at H&M. Don’t get stuck on the number, just keep in mind that H&M’s clothing runs a bit smaller than many other stores.

Don’t forget to check out the accessories! H&M is a great place to purchase inexpensive leggings, tights, hair bands, jewelry, purses and even shoes.

Tips & Warnings

  • H&M is the perfect store at which to stock up on trends. It’s affordable, so you won’t feel guilty if you only wear the article for a year, and then it goes out of style.

  • Avoid purchasing a large portion of your wardrobe from H&M (and that goes for any store) to avoid having that ‘look’. The best wardrobes are composed of a mix of clothing and accessories from a range of sources.

  • If you aren’t up for the crowds or don’t live near a store, shop H&M online from the comfort of your home.

  • Be aware that much of the clothing from H&M is wash cold/line dry. Be sure to check the labels as clothing tends to shrink/discolor if you do not follow the washing directions correctly.
